Compare OnePlus 5 vs OnePlus 5T

11 September 2018

With their outstanding performance and great camera quality, OnePlus devices have taken the smartphone market by storm. Here is a comparison between two models released in succession of one another- the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T.

Design and Display

As for the design, both devices are quite similar looking. They come with a metal body with very minute differences in dimension and weight. The OnePlus 5T is slightly longer and heavier.

The fingerprint sensor on the back is the biggest design change when it comes to the OnePlus 5T. This means that the home screen button is no longer present either.

The display screen has grown from 5.5 inches with the OnePlus 5 to 6 inches with OnePlus 5T. The resolution has been improved as well with 1080X2160 on the OnePlus 5T 5 and 1080X1920 on the OnePlus 5. They both come with an AMOLED Screen.

Power and Performance

The two devices are the same with power and performance. They both come with a high-end Snapdragon 835 processor and feature either a 6GB or an 8GB RAM. These devices run on the Android Nougat operating system. They will be upgraded to the Android Oreo shortly.  These devices come with either 64GB or 128GB storage with no option of expanding storage externally.

Camera and Battery Life

With the OnePlus 5T, the main camera is slightly upgraded. You have a dual lens 16MP and 20MP pairing in both the devices. However, the 20MP sensor on the OnePlus 5 comes with an f/2.6 aperture while the OnePlus 5T comes with an f/1.7 sensor on both lenses, giving better low light performance.

The camera app has been upgraded with the OnePlus 5T. It allows you to take pictures using the fingerprint sensor and provides easier navigation and gesture control options.

Both devices feature a Portrait mode that allows bokeh effects. For more contrail with your camera, you can choose the ProMode which is available with both these devices too.

The battery remains the same with both devices. You have a 3000mAh fast charging battery. Wireless charging, however, is not supported by either devices.

Price

There has been no price change on the two devices. You can get the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T for $479/ £449 for a 64GB model and for $539/ £499 for a 128GB model.

Overall, there is not much difference between the two devices. The major focus with the OnePlus 5T has been on improving the screen. The display is better and much brighter than the predecessor. The minor changes in the camera are welcome but not significant.

With very few buying options with the OnePlus 5, new users may not have a choice but to opt for the OnePlus 5T. For OnePlus 5 owners an upgrade may not really be necessary.
